Video games came along shortly after computers were created. It's only natural that programmers turned their great intellects towards entertainment. Many years after computers appeared, the internet was born. It took some time for both to catch on, but at the turn of the century both computers and the internet were mainstream. Now, almost no one can live without both in their home.
Technology advances and computer users (who play video games, of course) get to upgrade their comparatively slow modem connections to the great DSL. Transferring large video files, music, or even video games is now a cinch. As internet speeds continually rise, playing online video games becomes more and more popular.
Types of Online Video Games
Early online games were much like early computer games: text-only. These games were called MUDs, or Multi User Dungeon. The often fantasy-themed games allowed players to adventure and interact with text inputs and explore a whole world within their computer.
Technology advanced, as it seems to always do, and graphics and sounds were integrated into the online experience. With the updated hardware, online games could become more complex and graphically intense. The birth of massively multiplayer online games (MMOG) was the inevitable step-up from MUDs and similar forms of gaming.
Within the world of MMOGs there are many types of games ranging from role playing, adventure, action, strategy, simulation and first person shooters. By far the most popular online video games are role playing. Everquest and World of Warcraft are two of the best examples of this.
Free and Not-so-free Online Games
One major consideration when playing online video games is the cost. Sure, World of Warcraft may be enormously popular, but can you shell out the cash for it? Most MMOGs have payment plans that are reasonably priced. However, if you can find a great online video game that's free, what's the harm in giving it a try?
