If you're reading this, you have a computer. If you have a computer, you can play computer games. Maybe not the latest and greatest video card devouring monsters, but a world of video games are at your keyboard. Computers came before home consoles and portable video game systems, so computers were the first to have video games. Because of the versatile input devices (mouse and keyboard), computer games can be as simple or complex as the author desires. And because creating games on a computer is so easy (relatively speaking), there are tens of thousands of people in the world who make games for free. Really, if you're reading this, you have no excuse not to play computer games...
Beginning of Computer Games
The earliest of computer games were text-only adventures. When technology allowed pictures, gamers immediately got to work creating games. Computer games were simple to learn, fun to play and very very basic. Action, adventure, sports and puzzle games were the mainstay, as computers couldn't handle crunching the enormous amount of data needed to build more complex games.
Even with graphical capabilities, on-screen colors were extremely limited, and programmers had an even more limited palette to choose from. Moving objects could be little more than blocks of pixels. Enemies, walls, items, etc. could barely be distinguished from each other due to the hardware limitations. Did this stop computer geeks from making games? Not a chance.
Computer Games Today
Thirty years or so have passed since computing's early days. What do we seen on computer screens now? A lot. The video games industry is massive, and computers are a hot target for many of these games. Unfortunately, if you want to play the latest games, you'll need a deep wallet and lots of experience pulling the guts out of your PC. Hardware advancements take place almost every week, and developers are quick to take advantage of the new devices. Gamers must be quick on their feet to stay ahead of the game.
Despite the massive upsurge of complex computer games, a strong community of "retro" fans persists in keeping games simple and just plain fun. You can find all sorts of these games around the internet, often for a very small price (or even free).
It's often the case that computer games appear on the home console systems as well. The reverse is also true: popular console games are ported to the PC after favorable sales. An example of this is the Final Fantasy series. Square created Final Fantasy 7 for the PlayStation, then later ported it to the PC.
Computers vs. Consoles
The eternal debate of computer gaming versus console gaming will never be solved. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, each has a massive following of gamers. Playing video games on your computer gives you a lot of creative control and gives you access to more video games than a console gamer could ever dream of. At what cost? Lots of time, money, and computer headaches making everything work smoothly. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's well-worth it in the end.
