Is Copying Video Games Legal?

Piracy is an issue that has plagued the video game industry since its very early days, but it seems easier than ever to attain illegal copies of video games today. As such, console manufacturers have implemented numerous measures to help minimize the level of piracy. Some of these measures have been more effective than others.

Before you even think about how to burn free PS2 games, you might want to ask yourself whether such an action is legal. Many pundits say that the very act of copying a video game falls into a legal gray area. If you are making a backup copy of your own game, some say that this is perfectly acceptable. Others disagree.

The copying of video games will continue to be a hot topic for many years to come. Some will continue to argue that the downloading of pirated games is not illegal, but the distribution of illegal materials is illegal. Ultimately, it will be up to you (and the courts) to decide on a case-by-case basis.

Can I Burn Free PS2 Games?

The short answer is yes. Since the Sony PlayStation 2 has been available for a number of years, the "homebrew" and "hacking" communities have had a lot of time to work on a solution for playing burned video games.

Since the PS2 does not have an embedded hard drive, the process is not the same as the one used for ripping Blu-ray on the PS3. Instead, players will need to make physical copies of the games onto writable CDs or DVDs. This can be done from most computers with a CD/DVD burner.

However, a simple copy of a PlayStation 2 game will not work on just any PS2. Instead, the console must be modified with a "mod chip" that will allow it to played copied games. Even if you can burn free PS2 games, you will still need to invest in this console modification. As expected, such modification voids the manufacturer's warranty.

Backing Up Your Own Games

One of the main reasons why someone may want to make copies of video games is to make a backup for their existing library. Optical discs being what they are, they are prone to minute damages that can make the game disc unplayable.

For some of these games, it may be possible to fix the scratches. Other games may be scratched or even broken beyond repair, so having a backup copy may be advisable. By and large, individuals have not run into legal complications for this practice, so long as they maintain physical possession of the original disc and do not distribute copies to others.

Burning Discs from Friends

While it may seem like a perfectly viable and cost-effective solution for playing a range of video games, burning discs from friends is not at all advisable since this can run into copyright concerns and legal issues. This would be the same as buying and sharing pirated games.

Downloading ISO Images from the Internet

With the growing popularity of the Internet and peer-to-peer file sharing, the proliferation of free downloadable ROMs (usually in the form of ISO files) has also increased in popularity. These ISO images can be used in most conventional DVD authoring software packages to make a copy of a disc without having a physical copy of the original disc.

The sharing of public domain and free license games through this manner is perfectly acceptable and well within the realm of legality, but the sharing of copyright material is not. Before you go and burn free PS2 games that you find online, find out whether it is legal to do so.
