From LoveToKnow VideoGames
A casual game is any game you can pick up and play without having to learn complicated controls or delve into an intricate story. They let you click and play, either right from your Internet browser window or with a simple download. And most of the time, they're free! A large majority of free online casual titles are puzzle games that hook you with simple gameplay and keep you coming back for more.
Below you'll find a rundown of the most popular free online casual puzzle games: Text Twist, Zuma, Book Worm, Diner Dash and Bejeweled. There are thousands of similar puzzle games like this on the web, but these are some of the best. Playing them is just a click away.
Note: The games below will require Flash, Shockwave, or another specific plug-in in order to work. If you need to install the software, the website will give you links to the appropriate page.
Text Twist
One of the most popular casual games is a word game called Text Twist. You are given a set of six letters and six spaces. Click on the jumbled letters and try to make as many words as you can in the time given. Some versions even let you play against other Text Twisters in an online competitive mode!
Zuma
Another great casual game is Zuma, a puzzle game based on the classic arcade title PuzzLoop. A series of colored orbs roll on a path leading to an end point on the screen. Your job is to fire colored marbles to create matches of three or more to make them vanish. Keep the marbles from reaching the end of the screen and stay alive as long as you can!
Book Worm
A word-based puzzle game, Bookworm presents you with a field of tiles, each with a letter on the face. Click on adjacent letters to spell words, then submit them to get points. The longer the word, the more points you get.
Bejeweled
Known as a "swapping" puzzle game, Bejeweled's simple exterior hides an immensely addictive game just beneath. Before you lays a field of colored gems. Using just the click of a mouse you must swap them to make adjacent rows of three like colors. Create combos of vanishing jewels and play to your heart's content. Jewel Quest uses a similar formula to Bejeweled but introduces a few unique twists.
Checkers
You win the game by taking all of your opponents pieces or by blocking your opponent from making any more legal moves. To move a piece, click on it with your mouse. You can only move the piece one space forward diagonally. You cannot move the pieces backwards. The only time you can move the piece backwards is when you achieve a King. To king your pieces, you must reach the last row on the opposite side of the board. If you can jump an opponent, you must do so. To take your opponents pieces, jump over his piece diagonally and land in an empty square.
Diner Dash
With a limited free online version, downloadable demo and full-featured game available for $19.95, Diner Dash offers a lot of casual puzzle/strategy gaming in one package. You play Flo, a disgruntled office worker who decides to strike out on her own and open up a restaurant. You must seat customers, take their order, serve their food, bring them their bill and bus the table after they leave. Juggling the various tasks can be a real challenge, but fortunately there's enough strategy (and bonuses for good performance) to make this game a real winner. Happy customers leave better tips, so use the cash to upgrade your restaurant and bring in the big bucks.
